Oncology Hematology Care’s physicians lead the only adult stem cell transplant program in the Greater Cincinnati region. Used primarily to treat life-threatening blood disorders, such as leukemia and Hodgkin’s disease, bone marrow/stem cell transplantation can lead to the cure of a disease that is otherwise fatal.

E. Randolph Broun, MD, is the program director. James Essell, MD serves as associate director. They have extensive training in medical oncology, hematology and stem cell transplant and work with a multidisciplinary team of support providers based at The Jewish Hospital.
Bone marrow/stem cell transplantation can be either autologous or allogeneic:
  • In autologous transplant, the physician extracts healthy marrow from the patient, administers high-dose chemotherapy, and then reinfuses the patient's own marrow or stem cells back.
  • In allogeneic transplant, healthy donated bone marrow is used to replace a patient's diseased bone marrow. Donors can be either related to the patient or unrelated. Unrelated donors are located through the National Marrow Donor Program.
